The Cades Cove Picnic Area is conveniently located within the same complex as the Cades Cove Campground and Anthony Creek Horse Camp, right along Laurel Creek Road at the entrance to the famous Cades Cove Loop Road. Open year-round, the area welcomes visitors from dawn until 8:00 PM from May 1 through August 31, and until sunset during the rest of the year.

With eighty well-spaced picnic sites arranged along a single loop road, the area offers a scenic and relaxed setting. Abrams Creek flows along one side of the loop, while Green Branch runs along the other, creating a unique atmosphere where many tables sit directly beside the water. Even the tables in the center of the loop enjoy pleasant views of the creeks and surrounding forest.

Parking is available in shared lots around the loop, with supplies needing to be carried only a short distance — typically around 25 yards on average. Some tables are conveniently located right next to the pavement. The terrain is mostly flat, making it easily accessible for wheelchairs. Handicap-accessible tables are available near the two restrooms that serve the picnic area.

The loop is divided into eight distinct sections, each with its own cluster of picnic sites separated by stands of trees. Gravel walkways connect the tables within each section, bordered by wooden edging. Visitors should note that these wooden borders can become extremely slippery when wet — it’s best to step over them rather than on them.

Each picnic site includes its own grill. Most sites feature a single table suitable for smaller families, while a few larger sites offer two tables for bigger groups. Tables are fixed in place and cannot be rearranged, and there is no large group pavilion available at Cades Cove. For family reunions, corporate outings, or other large gatherings, the nearby Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area is the best option, as it can be reserved in advance.
